Villaverde in southern Madrid is a multicultural district, which has unfortunately been in the news for violent crime and race riots. It was industrialized in the 1950s, and the ceramics industry is a big employer in the district. There is also a plan to turn Villaverde into Madrid's Technology District. But at the moment, Villaverde is one of Madrid's poorest communities, full of unsightly high-rises where inhabitants, mostly immigrants from South America, live.
