Unión is a neighborhood with a rich history. It was a part of General Manuel Oribe’s camp which surrounded Montevideo during the famous nine-year siege of the city from 1843 to 1852.

Sadly, urbanization saw the destruction of many of the district’s landmarks in the decades that followed, although efforts are being made by the local government to restore some of them. The few existing landmarks include El Santuario Nacional de San Agustín y la Medalla Milagrosa, which faces the Plaza Cipriano Miró, and Hospital Pasteur, one of the oldest hospitals in Uruguay.
