Tres Cruces is so named because three major roads intersect here: Avenida 18 de Julio, Bulevar Artigas and Avenida 8 de Octubre. It is, therefore a major transportation hub. The neighbourhood’s busy bus terminal occupies the ground floor of Shopping Tres Cruces, a shopping centre marked by a big white cross called Cruz Papal in commemoration of Pope John Paul II’s visit to the region. Tres Cruces’ other mall, the Montevideo Shopping Centre, was the city’s very first shopping centre.

An important Tres Cruces landmark is the Obelisco a los Constituyentes de 1830. The granite and bronze obelisk with its hexagonal fountain was built in commemoration of the 1830 Constitutional Congress.
