Tocantins, noteworthy as the newest and one of the best-managed Brazilian states, draws immigrants from all over the country by virtue of its flourishing agricultural economy. Unlike its neighbours, the landlocked state has open pastures besides the expected rainforests, and rivers carving oases in the dry terrain. The North-South Railway currently in the works is foreseen to raise the standard of living in Tocantins in the coming years.
The state’s profile was raised when it became the site for the filming of the popular US television series Survivor. The capital is Palmas.
