Sumy is famous for its beautiful riverbanks and classic church structures. Its capital is Sumy City.

Sumy has many historic and cultural sites, among them the Cathedral of the Saviour’s Transfiguration, an 18th century neoclassical structure with beautiful frescoes. The Blessed Virgin Mary Annunciation Church, founded in Sumy at the beginning of the 20th century, made the oblast the centre of northeast Ukrainian Catholicism.

Sumy’s other important cities are Konotop, Okhtyrka, Romny, and Shostka.
