A modern architectural masterpiece stands out in Caracas’ South district, where neighbourhoods are rapidly being filled with contemporary high-rise condominiums. This is Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, which garnered a place on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Ciudad Universitaria was designed by Venezuelan architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva and built between 1940 and 1960. It covers several postal areas in the district and expresses the artistic ideals of the Modern Movement of the 20th century. It is best known for the outstanding duet it creates in urban landscape and architecture. Murals, mosaics, glasswork and all sorts of art have been incorporated into this great complex.
