Piauí is mostly inland, with only a tiny stretch of Atlantic coast. It is one of the least prosperous states in Brazil. Its capital is Teresina, named after the wife of Pedro II, Brazil’s second and last emperor. It is the country’s first planned city, and its design is said to have been inspired by a chessboard. The city is situated at the mouth of two rivers. Many of the buildings dating from its founding in the mid-19th century still stand.
