Thailand’s Northeast Region is also called Isan, from the Sanskrit word for “northeast”. It sits high on the Khorat Plateau, bordered by the Mekong River. The local culture shares many similarities with the culture of its neighbour, Laos.

Largely rural and agricultural, Isan is Thailand’s poorest region. However, it is also known for its rich culture distinct from the rest of Thailand, including its own folk music, celebratory processions, and cuisine.
