New South Wales occupies the southeastern region of Australia. It is the country’s oldest, most populated and most heavily industrialized state. Its largest cities are Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.

Tourism has flourished in the region, particularly along the coast and in the mountains. Its gorgeous, sunny beaches along the Central Coast, the North Coast and Sapphire Coast draw sun lovers all year round. Skiing during the country’s short winter season is particularly popular in the Snowy Mountains, the highest point in the Great Dividing Range that stretches from Victoria in the south through New South Wales to Queensland.

There are several cultural institutions in New South Wales. The Sydney Opera House is the home of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and its iconic white sail roof is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The state has a long list of museums and art galleries as well, such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Powerhouse Museum.

New South Wales has one of the best service industries in the world, focusing on the business and financial sectors, and information and communication technology. Other key industries are mineral production, agriculture, manufacturing, biotechnology and aquaculture.
