The working-class district of La Teja is undergoing a major urban facelift together with Capurro and Bella Vista under the Proyecto de Detalle-Cinta de Borde Bella Vista-Capurro. Following an incident of lead poisoning in the region, Uruguay’s only refinery, which is in La Teja, is undergoing renovation.

La Teja is famous for the La Reina del Barrio, a 40-day carnival that features groups of male performers called murgas, who present critical events in Uruguay in a satirical manner through song, dance, drama and comedy.
