The island of Kungsholmen (a prime area)  in Lake Mälaren is a quiet community with one of the most excellent residential districts in Stockholm. The capital’s City Hall and the Dagens Nyheter Tower are in Kungsholmen. The neighbouring islands of Lilla Essingen and Stora Essingen are connected to Kungsholmen and the rest of Stockholm by the large Essingeleden motorway. Lilla Essingen, the smaller of the two islands, is an industrial area, and residences here are mostly apartment blocks. There are popular swimming and sunbathing spots on the island, as well as a commercial area. Many of the homes on Stora Essingen are villas, and there are some restaurants and shops on the island as well.

Kungsholmen, which translates to “Island of the King,” has a collection of bars and restaurants, the Fridhemsplan transport centre and the Västermalmsgallerian Shopping Mall.
