When the city of Gurabo was founded in 1815, the hilly terrain prompted the early settlers to build stairs instead of streets. These brightly coloured "stairway streets"—reaching 22 floors high—can still be found in the town centre.

Other interesting sites to see in Gurabo include the Centro de Exposiciones, which has a museum, a photo gallery of the city's history, a beautiful bell tower and one of the oldest clocks in Puerto Rico.
