The former farm borough Itaim Paulista, once industrially stagnant because of poor roads and infrastructure, slowly caught up with its more prosperous neighbors when a railroad was built in the area. With the founding of the St. John the Baptist parish, the standard of living here rose, and lately the district inaugurated the General Hospital of Itaim Paulista and Shopping Itaim Paulista.

Cidade Tiradentes has a vast compound of over 40,000 housing units, the largest in Latin America. The district was designed as a low-cost dormitory project to bear the brunt of communities displaced by public works in Rio de Janeiro.
