Cantabria isn't what comes to mind when thinking of Spain. Cantabria's green, mountainous landscape has a cool, damp climate. The higher mountain areas have an alpine climate, with year-round snow on the peaks.
Cantabria's capital is the bayside city of Santander, where the Menendez y Pelayo International Summer University is located. Santander has excellent sports facilities and a significant port. Just a few kilometers away from the capital lies the medieval town of Santillana del Mar.
There are many Paleolithic sites in Cantabria, including Altamira with its famous cave paintings. Bears, wolves, and eagles can still be seen in its mountains, while in the nature park Cabarceno there are animals from five continents.
