Bayrampaşa is a residential and industrial suburb that is mainly occupied by immigrants from Rumelia and Anatolia. Unlike most of the other districts of European Istanbul, Bayrampaşa is full of tacky public housing, jampacked with residents and even with workshops and small factories. Large spaces which could have been used to build high-class residential spots are occupied by big industrial establishments. But despite poor community planning, the district remains an important manufacturing centre.
