Barajas is Madrid's most eastern district. The Madrid-Barajas Airport is located here. Before 1987, the area near the airport was rustic. It is now emerging as a major center of communications and industry. The old farmhouses of Barajas are gradually being replaced by modern residential developments. There is an attractive park called Alameda de Osuna, formerly the garden of the aristocratic Osuna estate. The development is partly due to the fact that the airport, as the gateway to the Iberian peninsula from the rest of the continent, is one of the world's busiest. The planned renovation and addition of the airport is a huge undertaking and will cost up to one billion Euros.
