Two northern suburbs of Dublin were combined to form the district of Artane-Coolock. The area is predominantly working class, with a large number of housing estates established by the local government. Artane (or Artaine) has a small industrial park and a large shopping centre. Coolock is a historic area. It has been inhabited for more than 3,500 years and has tombs that date back to the Bronze Age. An early Christian church was later established here. Residential development in the area escalated in the 1950s. The part of Coolock around Clare Hall is growing to be more upscale, and middle-class suburbs border the area.
