Sudan: Overview

Oct 02, 2007

Sudan (pop. 35,370,000; GDP/cap US$803) is situated to the south of Egypt, between Chad and Ethiopia. It is a country rich with potential, but severely impacted by the effects of civil war. About two million people have died in Sudan in the past two decades because of the war, and four million more have been displaced from their homes by the conflict between the Muslim pro-government North and the non-Muslim rebel South. Another war broke out in the western region of Darfur, and has been escalating since 2003.

War has overshadowed the developing oil export industry, though that has somewhat boosted GDP in the North. Despite the joint efforts of the international community not much progress has been achieved.
