Living There

Residents are taxed on their worldwide income. A resident is a person whose domicile is in Mauritius, excluding a person living in Mauritius for a temporary purpose, or present for less than 183 days in one tax year, or less than 270 days in three tax years.

Income tax is levied on income, less expenses, losses, and debts incurred in the production of income. The following personal reliefs and deductions may also be claimed:

Deduction for other handicapped person MUR50,000 (US$1,606)
Emoluments relief – maximum of MUR125,000 (US$4,335) 15% of emoluments
Retirement pension relief MUR75,000 (US$2,408) max
Pension contributions actual contribution
Interest Relief MUR125,000 (US$4,014) max
Life Insurance premium MUR80,000 (US$2,569) max
Savings relief up to 20% of net income
Investment relief (maximum of MUR50,000 (US$1,606)) up to 40% of investments
Deductions for medical expenses 75% of actual expenses
• In Mauritius – max. of MUR20,000 (US$642)
• Outside Mauritius – max. of MUR30,000 (US$963)

The net rental income then is subject to the following progressive tax rates:

25,000 – 50,000 (US$1,606) 20% on the band over US$803
50,000 – 500,000 (US$16,056) 25% on the band over US$1,606
